I have had several of patients ask lately, “Do you want me to keep taking these supplements?”
It got me thinking. A lot.
I realized something.
That it’s a complicated question.
The bottom line is no. Sort of. Mostly no.
I’ll do my best to explain.
I do believe that nature knows best, and that humans do best when they respect and act on that wisdom. Eating the right foods for YOUR body, ideally when they are actually ripe, being in nature, simplifying, de-stressing, and following the cycles of the seasons in terms of activities and rest.
The most trusting and basic part of my being says, “No. We shouldn’t NEED supplements.” (Tweet It.)
However, we’re often not heeding that wisdom of nature. And by “often” I mean we’re not. Who’s kidding who? Of course there are exceptions but for the most part we’re EXTREMELY far removed from nature.
Lets go back to the bucket analogy.
It will open in a new window. Then come back. Don’t get distracted by the other articles linked there.
Get the gist. Come back.
La la la la la la.
Okay. Good. You returned.
To stop the bucket from overflowing we need to do two things:
1. Increase the functioning of the bucket
2. Decrease the load of stressors going into the bucket.
And where the question, “Do you want me to keep taking these supplements?” gets tricky is where we focus our energies. Where we make our commitment. What we’re willing to do.
How courageous we are to make changes.
Most of my patients are willing to do SOMETHING to get their bucket functioning better. This is a great fit for supplements. Taking nutrients and herbs can and will catalyze and help the body-bucket function better.
I need to be honest. This is just a band-aid. It’s a surface solution.
The real, deep healing comes when we are able to look at, identify, change, or eliminate the factors that are actually filling up the bucket and slowing it’s function down in the first place.
This is a harder sell for my patients. And I get it. We live in an instant gratification, quick fix, there’s-a-pill-for-everything society.
But if stress is making you sick, and your job is making you stressed… you’ll need to change that variable if you don’t want to be sick anymore.
If certain foods are reactive to your biochemistry, you’ll need to remove them from your diet to heal.
Emotional traumas that go unprocessed or ignored, will bung up the bucket big time. If these aren’t dealt with, you won’t recover.
Your beauty care routine will continue to expose you to toxins, until you make a choice about what is more important – living an energetic, vital life or looking like a flawless (airbrushed mind you) magazine model.
When you’re not willing to exercise consistently in a way that really serves you, your bucket won’t ever be fit and healthy.
If you’re overeating for comfort, then even the metabolism boostiest herb won’t help you feel satisfied. You’ll still feel empty.
Not expressing your desires, passions, creativity, or gifts because of what ever BS you’re believing about what that means TO OTHERS, is no different than telling your body that you’re not a priority. That you’re not valuable.
Why would it bother healing something that wasn’t worth it?
Self discovery, love, and care will empty the bucket.
Like I say. I get it. These are hard choices. But the payoff is health and vitality beyond your wildest ideas.
So. Yes. Until you’re willing to explore more deeply the root cause(s) of why you’re not well, you’ll need the supplements. Once you’ve changed or eliminated the factors that are filling up your bucket and it is functioning the way nature intended… the supplements become less important, if at all.
I have a counter question for you. What are you willing to change?
Today consider if addressing the underlying cause(s) of your symptoms is less painful than continuing to spend money on and remember to take supplements.
If the answer is yes, I’m happy to help you – you don’t have to dive in by yourself. Brain-Based Transformational Coaching is fabulous for getting under the surface.
