I overheard an awesome conversation last weekend.
While hugging her hello, he said, “I haven’t seen you in so long.”
She said, “Yes, I’ve been in Mexico for five weeks.”
He said, “You don’t do things like regular people. Usually folks take one to two weeks off. You take five!”
She laughed and replied,
“Well I’m not regular people!”
I just loved this because she was honouring her unique needs as an individual and unabashedly so.
That was an awesome soundbite on it’s own.
But the goodness didn’t stop there.
She continued to describe that she’s able to run her business from anywhere as long as she has her laptop and WIFI.
He expressed his concern, “So you don’t even get a rest while you’re away.”
And she was quick to respond, “Even a change is a rest.”
And I also loved that!
Even a change is a rest.
She fully encapsulated what I myself had been experiencing that very weekend.
I had gone to Victoria to take some dance classes and workshops because dance is my medicine. I stayed at an awesome Airbnb – a super reasonable way to stay in a different place.
And it ended up being like a mini retreat. I was gone for a total of 24 hours. But I felt so rejuvenated when I came home.
Even a change is a rest. (Tweet it!)
I have some questions some for you.
How can you not be normal people and honour your own needs?
What do you need to do differently for yourself that others don’t need to do for themselves?
What do people think you should do for yourself but you don’t actually want to do or need to do?
And where can you insert even just the smallest change in your normal routine to find rest?
Maybe it means taking a different work route to work.
Maybe it means eating with out distraction – no TV, no books, no devices.
Maybe it means taking your dog to a different park.
Maybe it means trying something new at your favourite restaurant.
Maybe it means going to a different restaurant.
Where can you insert change to find rest?
It doesn’t have to cost anything.
Maybe it means turning off the TV at night and playing a family game instead.
Maybe it means starting your day with a brief 5 to 10 minute meditation instead of checking your email first thing.
Maybe it means having some beautiful lemon balm tea instead of coffee in the morning.
Maybe it’s trying a new vegetable.
Do you get the idea?
So since you’re not normal people you’re going to have to find your own changes that will create rest for you.
I would love to know your thoughts.
What makes you not like normal people?
Where do you see your needs being different from others?
How can you put change into your routine to access a sense of rest?
