Free GUIDE: 3 Simple Tools to Feel Great!

Why ABSOLUTELY Nothing is Wrong with Your Body or Your Health

Dr. Tonia Winchester, Nanaimo Naturopathic doctor shares why nothing is wrong with your body or your health. You're symptoms are the way of getting attention.I see sick people. (Not like the little boy in the Sixth Sense who sees dead people – not like that at all.)

What I mean is that in my naturopathic practice I see people who have physical, mental, and emotional symptoms. These could include: low energy, digestive distress or discomfort or dysfunction, poor sleep, skin reactions, anxiety, depression, or hormonal imbalances.

It breaks my heart when my patients say, “Something is wrong with me. My ______ is messed up. Broken.” They say this because that part has an undesirable symptom or set of symptoms.

And while that may seem realistic and logical, it’s simply not true.

There is nothing wrong with your body or your health. (Tweet it!)

Our bodies are crazy intelligent. I really do marvel at their wisdom.

Remember learning back in science class about homeostasis? That is a fancy word for the fact that the body is always trying to stay with in a specific range of physiological variables – temperature, pH, blood pressure, heart rate metabolic activity, etc. When certain factors make the system slide out of its normal range the body will compensate for that change to bring the system back into balance or homeostasis.

Your symptoms are the results of that compensation. The symptoms themselves are merely signals saying, “Hey I need your attention over here. Something in your life, diet, stress isn’t working.”

Your symptoms are flags, warning signals, awareness indicators – urging you to change the factor, thing, or behavior, that created the compensatory imbalance.

Kinda like the oil light in your car. When you see this signal, you pull over, and in order to make the light go out, you have 3 choices:

  1. Rip out the light (akin to surgery.)
  2. Cover it with black tape (like medications.)
(Both of these will make the light go out.
  3. Wave down a buxom young fella – ideally shirtless – and have him change the oil in your car.
Then now, because you have addressed the reason WHY the light was on in the first place it will naturally go out.

The light being on didn’t mean something was wrong with the light. In fact quite the opposite – the light was working perfectly.

It was the signal that you needed to change the oil – and potentially line up a date! 😉

Along these same lines there is nothing WRONG with your body because you have various symptoms. The body is just doing it’s job to get your attention, so you can address the root cause of the imbalance.

Lets looks at some human examples from my practice:

Your headache could be telling you that you’re dehydrated. So to fix the head ache you need to drink some water.

Your muscle twitches could be signalling you that you may be low in magnesium, calcium, sodium, or potassium. Simply adding some sea (NOT table) salt to your diet can give you the mineral and electrolytes that you’re needing.

Your joint pain may be telling you your system doesn’t like eating wheat, or dairy, or the deadly nightshades: tomato, potato, eggplant and peppers.

Your restless sleep may be caused by you not listening to your intuition.

Your skin rash may be related to unprocessed grief.

And your inability to carry a pregnancy to term might be related to environmental toxicity that is no longer in the environment, but sadly in you, and disrupting your hormone function.

The main purpose of this article is to shift you away from blaming or hating your symptoms. They are just doing their job – trying to get your attention.

This is true from the little niggly things to more serious things such as cancer.

I promise you this. Your body wants you to be healthy. But certain circumstances prevent that from happening. And until you address those factors, your symptoms will persist.

You need to respect your symptoms – even be grateful for them because they are trying to give you a message to change something so your body can heal.

I recommend getting curious. Take some deep breaths. Tune in. Check in.

What does your body need in this moment?
What does your mind need?
What does your spirit need?
What’s causing my system to be out of balance?

I’m trained to help you answer these questions. But with discipline and curiosity you can also be your body’s best listener.

You’d be surprised what your body is willing to share in response to these inquiries. After all it (your body) IS on YOUR side. It’s ultimately just looking out for you and trying to be as healthy as possible – and this is no easy feat considering all the circumstances that are causing it to compensate, pulling it away from homeostasis.
